These bioengineering installations will both lessen the severity of erosion of the coastline while providing additional native plant species where none currently exists. Annual dune nourishment and planting of American beach grass was included to raise the elevation of the existing dune to conserve this resource area which has been eroding at a short-term rate of four feet per year since 2018. The proposed coastal adaptation strategy considers the expected sea level rise. ACTIVITIES TO DATE: 2023 Summer •Installed the approved fiber roll array and reinforced marsh and nourished the array with compatible sediment. •Nourished the coastal dune with compatible sediment and planted American beachgrass throughout the area of nourishment. PROJECT CONDITIONS: During a site visit in early December, the fiber roll array and reinforced marsh were both found to be structurally in excellent condition. The bioengineering material and anchoring remain in the same conditions since being installed in September. Nourishment along the leading edge of the fiber rolls has slumped, exposing a small portion of the top roll. This is an expected movement of the sediment that was likely due to rain fall, not wave action. The reinforced cobble marsh has accreted a thin layer of sand that appears to be a natural accretion from Lewis Bay due to the color and grain size of the sediment. The planted American beach grass has become dormant with the change of the season, as seen in the attached photos. Monitoring of the project will continue through the winter, and the approved annual dune nourishment and planting of the reinforced marsh will be completed in the spring. ANTICIPATED ACTIVITIES: • Planting of the native plant species within the reinforced marsh and installation of a temporary above ground irrigation system will be completed in the spring. • The dune will be nourished with compatible sediment, per the approved plan. •Continued monitoring of the health of the plantings, fiber roll array, and cobble reinforced marsh. • Submit the 2024 monitoring report. 28 Lots Hollow Road | Orleans, MA 02653 Tel:(508)255-1113 | Fax:(508)255-9477 TMTM PHOTO DOCUMENTATION ON ATTACHED PAGES: 2 March 28, 2023 - The photos above show the severity of the erosion within the project area prior to the installation of the fiber roll array and reinforced marsh. September 29, 2023 - This image shows the condition of the project area following installation of the fiber roll array, reinforced marsh, dune nourishment, and planting of American beach grass. 3 September 29, 2023 - The photos above and below show the dune nourishment and planting of American beach grass following completion. 4 December 8, 2023 - Image of the project area from the beach looking over the dune nourishment. The nourishment has remained in place with only a small amount along the leading edge of the fiber roll array slumping down to expose the rolls. The dormant American beach grass can be seen throughout the dune nourishment. December 8, 2023 - Image of the project area from the existing lawn looking over the dune nourishment toward Lewis Bay. The dormant American beach grass can be seen throughout the dune nourishment.
