Re: Yarmouth Town Common Preservation Initiative
Dear Mr. Cudnohufsky,
Phil Whitten of our Parks Department recently sent me a copy of your 2/27/01 report concerning our
Yarmouth Town Common on Route 6A. Your report was most impressive as you quickly recognized
and succinctly stated the current situation and problems at Yarmouth's most historic site along Old
King's Highway.
Your recommendations were excellent and will be most beneficial when it comes time to ask for
funding. Our OKH Committee is looking forward to assisting in this worthy project, and have recently
issued a Certificate of Appropriateness for the 3 rail white wood fence surround as seen in old
photographs. The fence has been purchased and will be installed in the spring.
Sincerely,
6

Re: bA Common/Playground signage
Phil,
OKH has enjoyed working with your department and we have been working together to
compromise on these signs. OKH met last night to review your suggestions and the committee has
asked me to relate the following comments to you. There have been changes since you and I talked
last.
You wish the signs to be made in time for the summer season. Terrific! In the true spirit of
camaraderie and fair play, the OKH decided that at this time, you do not need to file a formal CIA
or CIE with us. We do request however, a memo describing the scope of work. We suggest it
include a color -coded sign legend for the different signs incorporated into the Common's plot plan
with anticipated sign positions shown,
We approved of the dark brown vinyl sample that you had provided as the background material,
with white letters, placed onto a wood -backed metal sign. We prefer the "Della Robbia" font.
We discussed the possibility of wood -backed white PVC sign with above colors scenario, but
rejected it as we felt the bulk of the sign would be most unattractive, You have stated the signs will
be as small in size and in number as possible. We concur!
We suggest all signposts be PT wood 4by4s, with edged routed off in some fashion to decrease
the mass and add nice detailing. I have a nice router bit for the purpose if needed. (Someone has
suggested a new wood called "ipace" for the posts. The spelling is most probably wrong and we
understand it is more expensive but supposedly lasts much longer than PT. We have never seen a
sample of this wood but it may be a thought for the future consideration... PT is fine with us for
now.)
We understand there are other regulatory signs that are of blue and red colors that are required at
the Common. OKH would have no control on the color but request those posts be wooden like all
the others. I was able to contact the Mitchells and Stillmans about this and they liked the idea. I
have been communicating with Peter Hughes about all the above, and he concurs that the Common
is on the right tract.
We know you have researched the sign wording and sign placement issue of these signs with the
Police and Fire chiefs and the OKH appreciates all the time you have spent on making the
Common more attractive. OKH applauds your efforts at this location and we are happy to been
involved.
I will be my understanding that the above is agreeable to you and your memo will follow shortly.
If there are any questions, please feel free to call me today, as I will be leaving the Cape by 7a
tomorrow for a long weekend andur vacation starts Monday.
