TOWN OF YARMOUTH 1146 ROUTE 28, SOUTH YARMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS 02664-44511 Telephone (508) 398-2231 Ext. 1292 Fax (508) 398-0836 Colleen McLaughlin, Office Administrator (cmclaughlin C yarmouth.ma.us) YARMOUTH HISTORICAL COMMISSION2 TO: Building Department 1 FROM: Colleen McLaughlin, Office Administrator { ©ATE: .tune 28, 2011 SUBJ: 9 Homer Avenue, South Yarmouth The Historical Commission received a demolition request for this address earlier this month, On June 23, 2011, at 3:00 pm, the members conducted a site visit to determine whether or not this property was significant to the architectural, cultural, or historical heritage of Yarmouth. A quorum of members was present. The site visit revealed that part of the building was significant and part was not. The original "front" house was found to be significant and potential changes were discussed with the owner. Relocation of the interior staircase was approved as was the demolition and rebuild of the dormer on the front of the house (new dormer to be centered on roof). The Commission encouraged the homeowner's plans to retain or reuse other significant elements, such as the wide floorboards and wainscoting. The rear ell (really two connected ells built at different times) were found to have already undergone substantial renovations by previous owners. Since the homeowner's request was to demolish and rebuild the rear ell(s), the Commission members present discussed the proposed plan and voted unanimously to approve the demolition request. The Commission was also shown some tentative drawings, which showed what the new ell might look like. The members agreed that the proposed ell was in keeping with the front part of the house. However, they also requested a full set of elevations of the finalized plans when they were ready. The Commission reserved the right to review those elevations before giving their final approval to the rebuild portion of the project. Please let me know if you have any additional questions concerning this matter.
