PROJECT INTRODUCTION
This project is located at 80 Mayflower Terrace in South Yarmouth adjacent to Dinah’s Pond. There is salt
marsh on the southeast end of the property with buffer zones extending toward the road as well as Flood
Zone AE (elevation 9). There is a small area of naturalized vegetation adjacent to the pond which is heavily
dominated by invasive vegetation. With this application, the applicant seeks to remove and treat the invasive
vegetation, reconfigure the shape of the naturalized area, and re-vegetate it with native species of shrubs,
grasses and forbs.
EXISTING CONDITIONS
This property is a developed single-family residence abutting Dinah’s Pond in South Yarmouth. There is an
existing dwelling and deck, stone driveway, and maintained lawn and landscape areas. There is a paved way
just off-property which serves as access to the pond for the neighborhood. A narrow section of salt marsh
abuts the pond on the southeast side of the property, and its buffer zones extend upward toward the road.
The property is also within Flood Zone AE at elevation 9. Naturalized areas are minimal on the property,
and are mostly limited to an area adjacent to the salt marsh which is largely dominated by invasive species.
Species observed in this area include Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), multiflora rose (Rosa
multiflora), grape (Vitis sp.), and garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata).
PROPOSED PROJECT ACTIVITIES
This project proposes to restore the area of naturalized vegetation adjacent to the pond. All invasive
vegetation would be treated and removed; vegetation for removal would be flush cut and treated with an
approved Glyphosate-based herbicide using a direct stem application method, and all applications would
be completed only by Massachusetts state-licensed and insured pesticide applicators. The naturalized area
would be slightly reconfigured so it’s a consistent width along the length of the property abutting the salt
marsh, thus creating a more uniform buffer strip. The square footage of the existing naturalized area is the
same as that which is being proposed. The reconfigured naturalized area would be seeded with a native grass
seed mix, and planted with native shrubs, grasses and forbs. The portion of reconfigured naturalized area
which is being made more narrow to achieve a more uniform width will be revegetated with a drought tolerant
fescue seed mix/sod.

PROJECT ACTIVITY TIMELINE
EARLY SPRING/SUMMER 2024
INITIAL INVASIVE SPECIES MANAGEMENT
• Treat and remove all approved vegetation using an appropriate herbicide using a cut and wipe (direct
stem application) method.
• Vegetation to be flush cut leaving the roots in place to maintain soil stability.
• Remove lawn where necessary within the restoration planting area using a sod cutter and tracked
skid steer.
• Seed exposed soils within the restoration planting area with the restoration seed mix and cover with
biodegradable erosion control blankets staked in place OR hydroseed the area with a biotic soil aid
and tackifier.
LAWN RESTORATION AREA
• Remove lawn where necessary within the lawn restoration area using a sod cutter and tracked skid
steer.
• Seed exposed soils within the lawn restoration area with the specified lawn restoration seed mix and
cover with biodegradable erosion control blankets staked in place OR hydroseed the area with a biotic
soil aid and tackifier.
FALL 2024
RESTORATION PLANTING
• Plantings to be installed after invasive vegetation has achieved a minimum of approximately 80%
eradication.
• Install a temporary, above-ground irrigation system after planting to provide supplemental water to all
plantings for 2-3 growing seasons or until plants are fully established.
2024-2026 GROWING SEASON
ANNUAL MAINTENANCE
• Monitor restoration areas and perform maintenance cut and wipe treatments or hand weed invasive,
non-native, or aggressive species that have germinated from existing seed bank or re-sprouted from
roots after removal.
• Mow/cut cool season grasses in June to encourage establishment of warm season grasses, if
necessary.
• Rejuvenate native shrub species, if needed, with regenerative pruning techniques to encourage new,
dense growth.
