We love our antique home and are committed to maintaining it and keeping it as authentic as
possible. While impressive homes on the Captain's Mile often get all the attention, we value the
fact that most people lived in far less lavish circumstances, and that such homes are equally as
important in the preservation of Yarmouth's history. (I have a long interest in the history of
Yarmouth, and, in fact, built the very first web site for the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth.)
Unfortunately, such homes did not have extraneous features such as porches (much less screened
porches) which we all enjoy on a warm summer evening. Our home is no exception. But owning
the home for nearly 30 years, we decided to invest in a simple, kit -type gazebo with hanging
screens to enjoy the outdoors in the evening as much as we do during the day. These simple
structures are available at many price points from vendors such as Ocean State Job Lot and Big
Lots, are assembled by the purchaser, and require little or no foundation or flooring, (however, I will
be using anchors for stability in wind). We have selected a slightly higher quality version called The
Alexander 10x12, from Kozyard.com. it is strong, attractive, and even supports a significant snow
load. It is made of rust -proof aluminum.
Our proposed location is our backyard, is nearly 100% invisible from off the property. The tiny
exception is shown in the accompanying photo where a small section of our front privet hedge
recently perished. We have replanted those, and those new plants plus existing bushes further
back on the property beside the house will render it virtually unseeabie. (My apologies for the
current state of the hedge — an overdue trim is on the docket for this week.)
This is not a permanent type structure, can be moved or disassembled if needed. Thank you very
much for considering our Request for Exemption. Please call with any questions.
Sincerely
Nigel Dobereiner
