MONITORING REPORT #1
November 11, 2024
Project Address: 6 Buttercup Lane
DEP File #: SE83-2411
Date of Issuance: 2/6/2024
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The approved project allowed for the installation of an 80 linear foot reinforced high marsh along the eroding toe
of the Coastal Bank and management of non-native and State-listed invasive plant species on the Coastal Bank,
including English ivy and black locust. The existing native plant community on the bank will be conserved by 1)
removing the invasive plant pressure and 2) reducing the severity of erosion at the toe of bank. Installation and
planting of the reinforced marsh will also provide additional native plant species where none exists.
ACTIVITIES TO DATE:
2024
• The reinforced marsh installation was completed in March. Access was accomplished from the top of bank
and no barge was required.
• Initial management of the targeted non-native and State-listed plant species was completed in March.
• Planting of the specified native species into the reinforced marsh was completed in June.
• Conducted follow-up management of the invasive and non-native plant species via the approved protocol
methods.
PROJECT CONDITIONS:
Several site visits have been conducted throughout the 2024 season to assess the condition of the reinforced
marsh and plantings. The reinforced marsh has maintained good structural condition through its first growing
season since its installation. The planted native species within the reinforced marsh have established very well
for a single growing season. Smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) and spike grass (Distichlis spicata) have done
exceptionally well where the highest levels of sunlight have reached the installation. Establishment of the planted
marsh grasses would be assisted by greater amounts of sunlight. The planted native species will be closely
monitored during the 2025 growing season.
Initial management of the targeted species on the bank has been very effective at reducing the invasive plant
pressure. Only minor re-sprouts of English ivy were observed on the shadier southern half of the Coastal Bank.
Re-sprouts of this pervasive non-native are very typical during the first season of management. Maintenance
visits during the 2025 growing season will continue to management of the re-sprouting non-native plant species.
2025 ANTICIPATED ACTIVITIES:
• Conduct follow-up management of the invasive and non-native plant species via the approved protocol
methods.
• Continue monitoring the reinforced marsh and health of the native plantings.
• Submit the 2025 monitoring report.

this portion of the bank. The planted native species in and above the reinforced marsh have established well.

Image of the southern half of the bank from the stairway. The English ivy density has been drastically reduced and the
native understory plant species should begin to re-colonise during the 2025 growing season.

the invasive plant pressure have conserved the existing native grasses and shrubs on the Coastal Bank.
