Dear Brittany:
On behalf of our client, the Great Island Homeowners Association (GIHA), we are providing an update on work
performed to maintain sand cover over the northern geotextile sandbag array along Great Island Road as permitted
by the Order of Conditions (SE 3-2431).
Renourishment of the northern 900-foot section of geotextile bags (north of the ‘S’ curve) took place on November
18 and November 21, 2024. Compatible sand was sourced from a dredging project in neighboring Sweetheart Creek.
Sediment samples were taken from Sweetheart Creek were testing for compatibility with the coastal beach and
coastal dune along Great Island Road. Figures 1 and 2 are the particle size analyses for the dredge site and the
coastal beach and dune.
In addition to evaluating the laboratory grain size data from the Sweetheart Creek sediments, Woods Hole Group
also performed visual inspections of the dredge material at regular intervals to ensure that the material did not vary
in consistency. Before renourishment began, we also made a visual inspection of the geotextile bags to ensure there
was no damage.
Robert Childs Inc. was the contractor who placed the compatible sand on the northern section of geotextile bags.
650yd3 of sand was used along the 900 feet of coastal dune and beach above the high tide line. Woods Hole Group
provided the construction oversight to ensure construction vehicles remained above the high tide line and that a
4:1 slope was maintained. Figures 3 and 4 show the completed renourishment.
GIHA has contracted Crawford Land Management to replace the southern section of geotextile bags with coir rolls,
adhering to Woods Hole Group’s engineered design. Coir rolls have been ordered and once delivered, construction
will begin. As per my recent email, there is a hold up at the Suez Canal, which may delay construction until early
February.
Finally, Woods Hole Group is completing the design and planned protocol for potential geotextile bag failure along
the northern section of coastal beach and dune. We expect to submit this protocol before the Christmas holiday.
Should you have any questions, please reach out at your convenience.
Sincerely,
Chris Gloninger
Senior Scientist and Project Manager
