These bioengineering installations will both lessen the severity of erosion of the coastline while providing additional native plant species where none currently exists. Annual dune nourishment and planting of American beach grass was included to raise the elevation of the existing dune to conserve this resource area which has been eroding at a short-term rate of four feet per year since 2018. The proposed coastal adaptation strategy considers the expected sea level rise. ACTIVITIES TO DATE: 2023 Summer • Installed the approved fiber roll array and reinforced marsh and nourished the array with compatible sediment. • Nourished the coastal dune with compatible sediment and planted American beachgrass throughout the area of nourishment. 2024 • In the early spring, nourishment was placed over the dune and exposed fiber roll array, and American beachgrass was planted thought the nourishment. Minor tightening of anchor cables was conducted. • In the early summer, the specified native plant species were planted into the reinforced marsh. PROJECT CONDITIONS: The fiber roll array and reinforced marsh remain in excellent condition and structurally sound after a second year in the coastal environment. They held up well during the many winter storms that affected the region through the 2023/2024 winter season. A listing of 10 winter storm warnings, coastal flood warning, and high wind warning is included with this monitoring report. This regional weather trend has caused a greater than typical need for replacement, repair, and nourishments on all WED coastal stabilization projects. Days that have included Winter Storm Warning, Coastal Flood Warning, and High Wind Warnings: 2023 - 3 Storms • November 21st • December 9th, 18th and 23rd 2024 - 7 Storms • January 6th, 9th, and 13th • February 13th, 27th, and 28th • March - none • April 12th 28 Lots Hollow Road | Orleans, MA 02653 Tel:(508)255-1113 | Fax:(508)255-9477 TMTM 2 PHOTO DOCUMENTATION ON ATTACHED PAGES: During the December 18th storm event, tidal waters over topped the fiber roll array and eroded the seaward half of the dune nourishment. The fiber roll array and reinforced marsh performed as designed. The fiber rolls and anchoring system had no damage and only minor tightening of anchor cables was needed. Coir material around the reinforced marsh remained intact. Compatible nourishment was placed over the dune and American beachgrass was planted throughout. American beach grass along the landward edge of the dune has become established as it enters its second season following planting. The American beachgrass planted in the spring of 2024 and plant species in the reinforced marsh were observed to be in good condition. The planted species, dune nourishment, reinforced marsh, and fiber rolls will contained to be monitored through 2025. 2024/2025 ANTICIPATED ACTIVITIES: • The dune will be nourished with compatible sediment, as needed, per the approved plan. • Continued monitoring of the health of the plantings, fiber roll array, and reinforced marsh. • Submit the 2025 monitoring report. 3 July 2024 - Image of the reinforced marsh after planting was completed.
