BOARD OF APPEALS
My name is Fran Laporte. I live on Springer Lane here in West Yarmouth. I am writing today in support of Jon Tolley.
Although I have not made acquaintance with Jon, my wife Donna, a lifelong resident of Yarmouth, went to school with
him at DY. It has come to my attention that Jon is undergoing some great difficulties pursuing what has been/is a
generational family business. As a resident in the neighborhood, I have never seen any inconvenience created by the
operation of his home business. I have driven by on several occasions observing no traffic, parking or navigation
problems. I have watched customers come and go, happily carrying their crustaceans to their kitchens and grills!
I feel I have some purchase to speak on this situation. As a diver, Dive Team Leader, Dive Rescue Instructor Trainer and
now commercial diver, I have taken literally thousands of the species Homarus Americanus in the past 49 years since I
was certified in 1976. 1 continue to please my family and friends each summer as I exercise my non-commercial lobster
license. I understand the cost, time, toil and problems our local lobstermen encounter. Having serviced many of them
underwater, I am acutely aware of their cost of maintenance. That Jon is attempting to provide for his family in a truly
New England fashion is a testimony to his dedication to his family, his craft and desire to be a "local Cape Coddah." I
would sincerely hope the zoning board of appeals would grant Jon an exemption, allowing him to continue as the third
generation of his family making their living out of the ocean we all love.
If not for being out of town this week, I would personally appear before you and speak on his behalf. I hope I have
clearly represented my position and strongly advocate for Jon to continue his business in my neighborhood.
Very truly yours,
Francis Laporte
