MEMORANDUM
BETA GROUP, INC.

BACKGROUND
On April 1, 2025, BETA staff visited the Yarmouth Riverwalk Park Site located at 669 Route 28 in Yarmouth,
MA to perform environmental monitoring during the Phase 1 construction period. The purpose of this
inspection was to document conditions of the salt marsh, erosion controls and park during Phase 1 of
construction. The following was observed during the inspection:
BOARDWALK/SALT MARSH
Areas of the salt marsh where wetland matting was placed adjacent to the constructed boardwalk were
observed as being sparsely vegetated. The eastern side of the boardwalk (Photo 2) was observed as having
more areas of sparse vegetation compared to the western side (Photo 3). Some of these sparsely
vegetated areas were also flooded. Within these areas, root systems of grass species (Spartina spp.) were
present, indicating some ongoing vegetative establishment. Crabs were also observed as burrowing
throughout the sparsely vegetated areas (Photo 5). Areas of the salt marsh will continue to be monitored
to ensure that full restoration is achieved.
Additionally, one area of residual grout /concrete was observed beneath the eastern side of the boardwalk
that requires removal (Photo 4).
EROSION CONTROLS
Throughout the site, erosion controls were observed in varying stages of biodegradation. Erosion controls
adjacent to the salt marsh on the eastern side of the boardwalk are in poor condition and require
replacement because the filter tubes are torn (Photo 1). Erosion controls adjacent to the salt marsh on
the western side of the boardwalk were observed in good condition.
Two (2) layers of erosion controls consisting of silt fence and compost filter tubes are present throughout
a majority of the site. In some locations, the compost filter tubes were observed in degraded conditions
(Photo 6). If silt fence is removed, new compost filter tubes should be installed in locations where
degraded compost filter tubes are present.
Erosion controls adjacent to the Parkers River near the upweller require replacement as the compost filter
tube has failed and no silt fence is present in this location (Photo 7).

RIVERWALK PARK
Currently, the Riverwalk Park is under construction. Throughout the park, areas of exposed soil with rill
erosion were observed (Photo 8 and 9). Generally, areas of exposed soil were observed to have erosion
controls in good condition downgradient, with the exception of the location near the upweller. Once
construction is completed in locations of exposed soil, stabilization should commence.
Two (2) areas of concrete that require disposal were observed throughout the park (Photo 10). The
concrete and impacted underlying soil should be removed and disposed of in accordance with the SWPPP.
During this inspection, no significant invasive species pressure was observed; however, the site should
continue to be monitored for success of the invasive species removal plan.
SUMMARY
Currently, the Yarmouth Riverwalk Park and Boardwalk Project is under construction. Observations made
during the April 1, 2025, inspection include the following:
Sparsely vegetated areas are present within the salt marsh adjacent to the boardwalk that should
be monitored this season for reestablishment,
Erosion/sediment controls throughout the site are in varying conditions,
Areas of exposed soil are present at the site but generally have erosion controls downgradient,
Erosion controls adjacent to the upweller require replacement, and
Multiple areas of residual concrete requiring proper disposal are present throughout the site.
