I wanted to take advantage of the timing of the recent arrest of those responsible for the fire last year and reach out to express my growing concern regarding the abandoned property located at 2 Route 6A in Yarmouth Port. This property, which has been left in a state of disrepair,is posing significant life safety and environmental risks to the public,as well as first responders. As you are aware, abandoned buildings, especially those in such poor condition, can present serious hazards, including structural instability, fire risks, and the potential for accidents. These hazards are not only a danger to anyone who might inadvertently encounter the property, but also to emergency responders who may be required to assist in the event of an incident. Additionally, there are environmental concerns,.particularly regarding the presence of hazardous materials such as asbestos. Given the building's state of decay, the risk of asbestos exposure increases, posing a serious health threat to both the community and workers involved in any future demolition or abatement activities. Considering these concerns, I respectfully urge you to take immediate steps to either secure the property or with demolition. Securing the building to prevent unauthorized access would reduce the risk of injury and potential asbestos exposure, while demolition, following proper environmental and safety protocols, would eliminate the hazard altogether. If asbestos abatement is necessary, it is critical that the proper measures are taken to ensure the safe removal of these materials, minimizing exposure to the surrounding environment and public. Acting now will not only help ensure the safety of our community and first responders but will also address the growing environmental concerns associated with the property. Continued inaction will only increase the likelihood of a serious incident occurring, both from a safety and environmental standpoint. Previous attempts to secure this property have proved inadequate, and we were very lucky on the night of the fire in that there was no wind and that none of the responding personnel were seriously injured. The building commissioner and I still reserve the right to pursue action through Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 139, Common Nuisances, but hope that we can work through these issues in a more informal manner. I would appreciate your prompt attention to this matter, and I would be happy to assist or provide additional information if needed to address this issue. We are all committed to maintaining a safe environment for residents, visitors, and first responders, and your cooperation in resolving this matter will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your attention to this urgent issue. I look forward to your prompt response and action. Respectfully submitted, Enrique Arrascue Fire Chief Town of Yarmouth
