Good morning, Thank you for reaching out regarding the proposed farm near adjacent shellfish habitats. The Division of Marine Fisheries does not object to agricultural use in proximity to shellfish resources, provided that best management practices (BMPs) are followed to protect water quality. Given the location adjacent to a shellfish growing area, it is important that the applicant implement a waste management plan that ensures no runoff of animal waste or associated nutrients into nearby wetlands or waterways. We would recommend that the Conservation Commission require adherence to BMPs. Please let me know if you have any questions. The applicant plans to operate a farm with animals along the marsh on Mill Creek on Yarmouthport. They plan to collect all animal waste for composting. Does DMF wish to weigh in or impose any sort of restrictions due to the adjacent shellfish habitat? Going in front of the Conservation Commission next week. If you would like to discuss with the conservation administrator I can set up a call. One abutter is concerned about the vicinity of a farm (30 pygmy goats and 2 miniature donkeys) to shellfish propagation area. Do you have any thoughts or concerns about this? Of course we want to maintain water quality to the extent possible, but agriculture is generally permittable under the wetlands protection act.
