Dear Mr. and Mrs. Donovan:
As you know, I visited your house at 22 Goldemod Lane on July 29,2014, in response to a complaint
received by this department. I was shown the basement and the former garage by Mr. Donovan. The
allegation under investigation was that the basement and/or the giuage were being used for dwelling
purposes. I observed that a portion ofthe basement was being used to facilitate the playing ofvideo
games, but that it was not otherwise being used as habitable space. The former garage, however, has been
converted into sleeping space.
Assessor's records compiled in I 996 and 2005 describe a "finished garage", but do not show this
conversion. The garage is also not included in the Assessor's record ofthe living area ofthe house.
However, I observed a bed, and an air conditioner in the room. The garage door has been removed,
and replaced by a window. The lister for the Assessor in 2005 noted all extemal changes to the
property, including the wood deck and hot tub in the rear, but he did not observe any change to the
garage door in the front. It would seem that the alterations were performed subsequent to his visit.
The Building Department has no permits on file for this conversion. You are hereby ordered to apply
for all relevant permits, including Building, Electrical, and Plumbing/Gas. Please be aware that you
may be required to remove sections ofwall to demonstrate energy code compliance, and that permit fees
(for work was done without permits) will be doubled.
