50 FOOT BUFFER TO COASTAL
BANK
• Site plan provided by John O’Reilly and Associates, Inc.
• This plan proposes invasive species management and native vegetation
restoration througout the property. The property is located fully within the
buffer zones to salt marsh and coastal bank.
• This plan proposes invasive species management in 794 square feet, focusing on
the area directly adjacent to the salt marsh, where the majority of invasive plant
species are identified.
• Native plant restoration is proposed where there is existing lawn in order to
create a more robust and beneficial vegetated buffer strip to the salt marsh. This
area encompasses approximately 966 square feet.
• 17.5 cubic yards of sand will be added along the stone revetment to enhance
sand accumulation in this area and support establishment of American beach
grass.
• The flat area above the septic leach field shall be enhanced for aesthetic and
functional value. A small, circular shell sitting area is proposed in the center.
The perimeter of the containment wall shall have a three-foot wide native flower
bed, and a small picket fence will be installed on top of the wall for safety.
• Invasive vegetation on site includes Asiatic bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus),
black swallowwort (Vincetoxicum nigrum), and common reed (Phragmites
australis).
• Invasive plants will be selectively treated with an EPA-approved systemic
herbicide and removed by hand. No soil disturbance shall occur, as all
management practices shall be carried out without the use of machinery.
• Native vegetation on site includes bayberry (Myrica pensylvanica), beach plum
(Prunus maritima), hightide bush (Baccharis hamilfolia), salt marsh grass
(Spartina patens), seaside goldenrod (Solidago sempervirens), Pennsylvania sedge
(Carex pensylvanica), and American beachgrass (Ammophilia breviligulata).
Non-native, aggressive rugosa rose (Rosa rugosa) is also found throughout the
site.
• All existing native vegetation will remain. After the invasive removal, native
plants will be assessed for health, and any that have been heavily damaged by
invasive vines may be regeneratively pruned to promote healthy regeneration
and vigorous growth.
• After invasive species removal, all bare soil will be seeded with a native grass and
wildflower mix (see right).
• The restoration areas will be planted with 46 native shrubs, as well as native
grasses (see Plant Schedule for details).
• Landscaped areas include foundation and front yard plantings, and the area
to the northeast on top of and beside the elevated septic leach area. All plants
proposed are native, with the exception of two species, which are non-native but
non-invasive, drought tolerant, and low maintenance.
• All vegetation debris will be removed from the site and brought to an off-site
disposal area.
• Temporary irrigation will be required for the first two to three growing seasons
while plants establish. Drip irrigation to be used on all shrubs, grasses, and
perennials. Once plants are established irrigation will be removed.
• Follow up invasive species management will be ongoing over the next three
growing seasons to ensure proper management and successful restoration.
