Re: Tight Tank
484 (Unit G) Station Avenue, South Yarmouth
Dear Norman,
I am in receipt of a plan dated January 24, 1997, for a tight tank to be located at 484 (Unit G)
Station Avenue, South Yarmouth.
The current retail sales building has a 1985 Title V septic system, designed for retail use. The owner
now wishes to renovate one of the existing retail stores into a pizza and sub shop. There will be up
to six(6) people involved in this operation.
The existing toilets will remain connected to the Title V septic system. The kitchen waste from the
three bay sink, mop sink, hand sink, and floor drains will be directed to the new proposed tight tank.
A tight tank is proposed as the facility lies within the Town's Zone II Groundwater Aquifer
Protection District. Town zoning does not allow restaurants or food manufacturing within the
Aquifer Protection District without proper safeguards, due to concerns for groundwater protection.
You are now proposing the tight tank to collect all waste water from the pizza and sub shop
operation. The waste water will be brought to the Town's Septage Treatment Facility. This tight
tank will be more environmentally protective than any discharge into the aquifer.
With the increased regulations for the protection of groundwater within Zone IIs, the installation of
a tight tank is the best environmental solution to allow businesses to develop and expand within
aquifer protection districts.
The Health Department approves the use of the tight tank, subject to the following conditions, which
will be placed on the food service permit:
1. Separate water meter required for kitchen flow grey water.
2. Water readings to be taken monthly, tight tank pumpings, with volume and dates to
be recorded and maintained. A yearly report shall be prepared and submitted to the
Yarmouth Board of Health for their approval.
3. Engineering inspection of the tight tank installation is required.

The above conditions would be an annual requirement for renewing the food service permit.
The tight tank must be approved by D.E.P.,with this department receiving the D.E.P. approval letter
prior to this department issuing a septic permit for the tight tank installation.
