My 25 yr old son Tyrell died Feb 6lh,2024 from Mitragynine toxicity. lt was his sole cause of death, with no secondary causes(attached death certificate). Tyrell drank a Kratom seltzer drink marketed as sugar free, alcohol free, and caffeine free. He was my only child and the light of my life. I am a lifelong Massachusetts resident and Tyrell was born in Lowell, Mass, graduated from Dracut high in 2017 and served Massachusetts as an army reservist at Fort Devens. I am sure many people have spoken or written to you in favor of Kratom, most not from this state. You will hear from lobbyists and their billion dollar Kratom industry, business owners who sell it for a profit, and users of Kratom. I have nothing to gain by writing to you. [t/y son is already dead, I am making no money from this, and I don't use Kratom. My only goal is to prevent another parent from feeling the pain I feel every second of every day of my life. lt is so no other parent has to visit their only child under dirt in a cemetery or cry for almost 700 days straight missing their child. Beyond that, I have no agenda. For those of you not aware of Kratom, it has the addictive properties of opioids. The fact users say it helps them stay off opioids does not diminish the addictive properties and dangerousness of this substance. Regulation, by age or just the synthetic 7OH version will not work. Pro-Kratom advocates will say they are for regulation by making it 21 plus and banning 7OH. What they fail to say is that the majority of deaths are from people older than 21(men between the ages of 21-40) like my son, and that synthetic 7OH did not come into play until the end of 2023.They will not say the more mitragynine you consume, the more it breaks down in the liver into 7OH. T The majority of people using whole leaf, synthetic, or 7OH are recovering addicts. You can hear it stated in almost every hearing. Why did Fell Free Wellness Tonic, one of the largest sellers of Kratom drinks, have to pay 8.75 million dollars and add a disclaimer on the back of their can stating "lndividuals with a history of substance abuse are advised against use." If it is so natural, why can't you use it if you have a history of substance abuse and why does it state you should consult a physician before trying it, if you are on any medication? lt also says it is not evaluated by the FDA. This should be gravely concerning to you. You will hear people testify that veterans use it to help them with their PTSD. Why then did the DOD ban Kratom in ALL armed forces? Use of it is punishable by the Uniform lrililitary Code of Justice. That in and of itself is telling. I could go on and on but these are just a couple examples of how Kratom, in all forms, is being recognized as dangerous, addictive, and deadly. Voices that have helped ban Kratom in their Mass towns include Chief of Police in Bourne, MA, Brandon Esip, Chief of Police in Littleton, MA Matthew Pinard, who reached out to me wanting Kratom banned in his town as his brother in law overdosed on it. Lowell Mayor Eric Gitschier and Lowell Board of Health member Erin Gendron, Marlboro councilman Mark Vital, Northampton resident Dr, Shelly Berkowitcz who almost lost her son to a Kratom overdose, and Plymouth nurse Katherine Marini who warns of the danger and addictiveness of Kratom. Listen to your numerous other towns beginning to have hearings to ban as well. Watch these public health meetings yourself and see that even though pro-Kratom advocates spoke, your fellow towns of Billerica, Kingston, Northampton, Lowell, Chelmsford, Dracut, Bourne, Mashpee, Canton, Marlboro, Marshfield, and Belchertown have voted for a complete ban, 4 within the last few months. I implore you to ban ALL forms of Kratom, natural and synthetic. You will be saving more lives than not. My view on Kratom is personal and proven. All of these people testifying that Kratom has saved their Iife, that is opinion only. I have yet to see one letter from a doctor stating that it has saved a life. You wilt not see that because a doctor will not put their stamp on that. However, I have a letter from a doctor stating that Kratom took my son's life. Death certificates do not lie, autopsy reports do not lie. My son is dead and Kratom, not 7OH, killed him. Please don't allow another parent to have to live the rest of their life without their child, due to a substance that if it already hasn't, will kill some of the people you represent.. Thank you and with much respect, Holly I hope you can take the time and read what is on this website. lt will help educate you more http-sJ ^AAA4Jlr.SlheIsAgainstherbalabuse.org/kratom-f or-lawmakers. html - -- I- -- --- -(1 - c\l 00 \o M)oO O\o O. ...$ .o These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA.
