Hi Brittany and Joe, I could address these on Thursday but thought it might be helpful to send something in advance * Space is clearly limited at this site, but 1:1 is a steep revetment, and as you know the guidelines recommend no steeper than 1.5:1 when possible. Can you please explore the possibility of a 1.25:1 slope for discussion? I will prepare a profile to see the effect. The waterbody is a pond with limited fetch thus smaller waves. The common technical guidance for revetments seems to be a one-size-fits -all approach where it is absolutely tru that in energetic locations with granular sediment and related beach scour that a shallow slope eats wave energy better. My technical preference for this site was a vertical bulkhead that is installed surgically with minimum excavation but the natural aspects of a stone array of a reasonable face slope, replicating close to the existing became an ecological preference. With texture and proper stable assembly the 45 degree slope would not be detrimental in the specific water body fronted by healthy salt marsh. * Plant quantities are missing from the planting plan and will likely be requested Whoops. In my rush I forgot that. I will make a count. * How will the salt marsh be protected with new toe stone installation? It directly abuts the existing revetment. This is the critical question and I believe that strict attention needs to be paid to the work effort. Owner needs to be put on formal notice. I’m serious. I have described the necessary activity and safeguards to the group that he appears to be hiring. They will need guidance. A firmly staked fabric silt fence with some holes in it to allow water to flow through to prevent it from becoming a dam is still only a visual limit. The entire issue of protecting the salt marsh is 100% based on workmanship, undivided attention to the careful handling of the materials and meticulous execution. I have all of the concerns you will have. There is no activity permitted seaward of the existing stones. I believe there will be a “ hemstitching” effect along the stone / salt marsh boundary where, if an existing toe stone must be reset there is minor disturbance akin to a crew installing a walkway in a salt marsh with temporary effects but there is no encroachment outward. If managed appropriately even with a few slip ups the result will be acceptable with good recovery. The way I see this job happening is a shelf from which to work is carved into the upper tier. Mini-excavator with a thumb must pluck out and rotate with the stones for removal and reset. Small loader moves in and out along the shelved tier for the process. Limited length at a time. I believe this is described in the protocol and has been / will be again/ explained to the workers. Inspection should be mandatory with possible drop in visits by you.
