At that time, my concerns were: (1)A lack of access to .l drinking water due to a malfunctioning bubbler. One could purchase water or use the faucets in the f toilet area, however. (2)The ambient air was hot and humid. (3)Stretching mats seemed not to have been cleaned recently, if ever. (4)The shower stalls, lockers and locker areas had not been cleaned in months. In fact, the showers and toilet areas have been inhabited by a population of small black insects. Since our conversation, the hygiene conditions at Planet Fitness have deteriorated. For example, what seems to be dry fecal matter has sat, undisturbed, under the toilet paper dispenser for several weeks. It seems to me that Yarmouth's eoard of Health is somewhat limited in ensuring sanitary conditions at any health and fitness facility. You cannot, certainly, force gym users to wash their hands after toileting before they return to the gym floor to use equipment, which is a regular occurrence at Planet Fitness. However, you can insist that walls, floors, and shower stalls are regularly cleaned and sanitized. Further, you probably need a reasonably frequent inspection schedule for both health clubs that are located in Yarmouth. "Occasionall/' inspecting them seems insufficient to minimize the risks to public health caused by improperly maintained facilities.
